Domaine Robert Chevillon
The wines of Domaine Chevillon are absolutely superlative.
Why, then, is the name of Robert Chevillon, the owner and winemaker, not
plastered across the pages of wine magazines and newspaper columns? Perhaps
because Monsieur Chevillon has absolutely no need for publicity in order
to sell wines. He has always operated according to the principle that excellent
wines sell themselves, and it hasnt failed him yet.
At Domaine Chevillon there is no flamboyant winemaker
with a funny story to tell, nor an aristocrat with a title that lends an
aura of authenticity to his yellowish "parchment" wine labels. Instead, there
are marvellous wines.
Domaine Chevillon consists of 13 hectares of vines,
all located in the village of Nuits-St-Georges. In addition to Robert Chevillons
talent, what undoubtedly contributes to the quality of these wines is the
age of the domaines vines - they range from 25 to 75 years old! Monsieur
Chevillon does not believe in periodically replanting his old vineyards.
Instead, he controls both the quality and quantity of his harvest by keeping
his vines for as long as possible. These old vines, in combination with ideal
sites yield exceptional fruit which result in wines with enormous depth,
a velvety texture and great complexity.
Robert Chevillon has no need for the winemaking gimmicks
which enable mediocre winemakers to extract extra colour and flavour from
the grapes. Nor does he require large quantities of new oak barrels to compensate
for a lack of flavour in his wines. Robert Chevillon works quietly and intelligently,
without the "help" of the outside world and without regard for the latest
fads in consumer demand. One taste of his wine will say more about the success
of his approach than any words on paper possibly can!
