The late Gerard Potel was always a courageous pacesetter
and a force for better Burgundy. Starting life as a farmer in the Aisne,
he became director of the Domaine de la Pousse dOr in 1964 and was one of
the first growers to discard less than perfect grapes at vintage time, thus
ensuring his domaine-bottled wines were only of the highest standard each
year. Thirty four years on, Gerard was one of the two surest sources of great
Volnay, the other being Michel Lafarge.
The Domaine owns 13 hectares of the finest sites in
Volnay and is the largest proprietor of Volnay Caillerets, owning the monopole
of Clos de 60 Ouvrees.
The 1991 is a superb wine from a very underrated vintage,
its soaring Volnay aromas and concentrated, but in no way overoaked, flavours
typical of Gerards light touch in the winemaking. The Domaines top wine,
the monopole Clos de la Bousse dOr, is made from vines in the heart of the
Volnay hill - a magical, silken-textured red Burgundy of the highest class.
