Manfred and Wolfgang Prum represent the third generation of the family business started by their grandfather, Johann Josef (hence Job. Jos.), in 1911

The estate features some of the finest vineyards in the Mosel - the largest holding being the Wehiener Sonnenuhr sites where the soil is not much more than broken grey slate on the slopes inclined up to 70 degrees. Under Manfred's direction, the estate has continued to represent the very expression of traditional Mosel Rieslings. Prum takes them a stage further than their competitors, creating tremendously intense wines with more concentrated fruit, floral and mineral characteristics which play foil to the racy acidity.

Like his father, Manfred has been a real gambler when it comes to harvesting. Grapes that do not meet his requirement for ripeness will be left hanging in the rain in the hope that sunny weather will return and ensure proper concentration. He is philosophical about the occasions when he loses his bet against worsening weather conditions, saying that he wins more often than he loses. This patience for ripeness shows through from the zesty, fine Kabinetts to the super-concentrated TBAs.

There is a small amount of sweetness in his Rieslings, which is naturally retained by the long, slow fermentation process in stainless steel and maturation in traditional 1000-litre Fuder casks. Then it is the drinker's patience that must be tested as the myriad of complexities can take up to ten years to develop fully.

These wines repay cellaring and the estate is famous for making some of the longest-lived white wines in the world.
