Krug

The brightest star in the sparkling firmament, Krug is the supreme champagne by which all others are judged. The house was founded in 1843 by Johann Joseph Krug, a German citizen from Mainz who had previously learnt the art of champagne blending at Jacquesson before establishing his own business.

The distinctive taste of Krug champagnes - full and round yet creamy and elegant - is initially formed by the traditional way in which they are vinified. Krug is the only house which ferments all its wines in small oak barriques. This process undoubtedly contributes to the vinous house style, which is quite unlike any other. But the critical quality factor here is the firm’s extremely rigorous approach to the art of blending. The brothers Henri and Remy Krug and their respective son and daughter, Olivier and Caroline, represent the fifth and sixth generation of the family. They are all involved in the crucial annual blending of their flagship prestige champagne, the Krug Grande Cuvee. This is, as winemaker Henri Krug puts its, " a blend of the broadest possible dimensions, intricately blending as many as 40 to 50 different wines from 20 to 25 different growths and 6 to 10 different vintages." The typical grape composition for Grande Cuvee might be 45 - 55 per cent Pinot Noir, 25 - 35 per cent Chardonnay and 15 - 20 per cent Pinot Meunier. It’s characteristic of the Krug’s serious but unstuffy approach to their work that they should be such champions of the Meunier grape: they simply believe it adds fruitiness, spice and charm to the blend. The final contributory factor to the peerless quality of Grande Cuvee is the six years spent ageing on the cork before release, compared with a maximum of three or four years for champagne blends from other Grandes Marques. The barrels, the blending and the age all explain that specially satisfying Krug flavour; rich, nutty, mature, but always clean and refreshing.

The vintage champagnes at Krug obviously rely for their individual style more on the character of the respective years than on the blender’s intervention.

Finally, we are proud to offer the superb Krug Rose. Wonderfully fruity yet very dry, it is a wine to accompany the finest gastronomic dishes, especially those based on lobster or veal.
